Why does an escalator handrail move at the same speed as the steps?

Because the handrail moves in step with the stairs, so you never get tugged off balance. Hidden machinery inside the escalator links the steps and the handrail together. The handrail loops smoothly around hidden wheels, while the steps travel along their own tracks, both moving at exactly the same speed.
