How does a microwave know its door is closed?

Because tiny safety switches are only pressed the moment the door latches fully shut. A microwave must never run with its door open. So when the door closes, it presses several hidden interlock switches. The control circuit checks every one before allowing the magnetron, the part that makes the microwaves, to switch on.
