Why do car tyres have grooves?
Because those grooves give rainwater somewhere to escape, so rubber can keep touching the road. A smooth tyre grips a dry road just fine, but rain changes everything. If water gets trapped underneath, a car can start riding on a thin layer of water instead, called hydroplaning. Grooves channel that water safely away.
