Why are many pencils hexagonal instead of round?

Because six flat sides make a pencil easier to grip and far less likely to roll away. A hexagonal pencil sits comfortably between your fingers and won't roll off your desk the way a round one might. That shape is handy in factories too, since it can be cut from wooden slats with much less wasted wood.
