How does a stapler bend the metal underneath the paper?
Because tiny curved grooves in the base bend the staple's legs into place. When you press down, a metal driver pushes one staple straight through the paper. Underneath, a small plate called the anvil has curved grooves that catch the staple's pointy legs, guiding them neatly inward as you keep pressing.
