Why does a tape measure snap back into its case?

Because a coiled spring stores up energy every time you pull the tape out. Inside the case sits a flat spiral spring. Pulling the metal tape out winds that spring tighter. It always wants to spring back to its relaxed shape, so releasing the lock lets it snap the tape back inside.
