Why can't you open a pressure cooker while it is pressurised?

Because trapped steam inside is pushing hard, and the lid locks to keep everyone safe. A pressure cooker heats water into steam inside a tightly sealed space, letting food cook hotter than ordinary boiling water ever could. But all that pressure also pushes hard on the lid, so opening it too soon could blast out steam and scalding liquid.
