How does a smoke detector notice smoke before you do?

Because a smoke detector is watching for tiny particles, not waiting to smell smoke. Many home detectors use either a beam of light or a tiny electrical chamber. In one type, smoke particles scatter light onto a sensor that's normally kept dark. In another, smoke quietly changes the flow of charged particles inside.
