Why do seatbelts suddenly lock when you pull them fast?

Because a fast, sudden pull makes a hidden latch instantly catch the belt spool. The belt winds around a spool inside the retractor. Normally it turns freely, letting you lean forward easily. But if it's pulled quickly, or the car slows suddenly, a clever inertia mechanism locks it firmly in place.
