How does a ratchet turn one way but lock the other way?

Because a small hinged catch slides freely one way and bites firmly the other. Inside every ratchet sits a toothed wheel and a tiny catch called a pawl. Moving the handle one way, the pawl clicks smoothly over the sloped teeth. Turn it the other way, and the pawl locks in, gripping tight.
