Why do screws need different-shaped screwdrivers?

Because every screw shape trades off grip, cost, strength, and how easily a tool can slip. A screw head is really just a tiny connection point for a turning tool. A simple straight slot is cheap to make, but a screwdriver can slip right out. Cross, hex, square, and star shapes grip far better and handle more twisting force.
