How does a parking sensor know a wall is close?

Because a parking sensor sends out sound pulses and listens closely for their echo. Using ultrasound, a pitch far too high for us to hear, the sensor sends out a short pulse and times how long it takes to bounce back off a wall, car, or post. Since sound travels at a known speed, it can work out the exact distance.
