How can plants warn each other about insects?

Because some plants release chemical signals the moment insects attack. Plants can't shout for help, but a damaged leaf can release tiny airborne chemicals. Nearby plants pick up on those signals and start making bitter or toxic compounds, making themselves far less tasty to insects.
