Why do some seed pods explode?

Because stored tension inside the pod flings its seeds far away. As some seed pods dry, their outer layers shrink unevenly, building tension like a tiny loaded spring. When the pod finally splits open, all that stored energy releases at once and hurls the seeds outward.
