How do fungi connect the roots of different plants?

Because fungi grow tiny threads through soil that can link up with plant roots. Many fungi grow as fine threads called hyphae. Some form true partnerships with roots, called mycorrhizae, helping the plant absorb water and minerals in exchange for sugars the plant makes through photosynthesis.
