Why does the corpse flower smell like rotten meat?

Because that rotten smell calls in pollinators who normally visit dead animals. A corpse flower's awful smell is no accident. When it blooms, it warms parts of its giant flower structure and releases chemicals just like rotting flesh, fooling flies and beetles into paying a visit.
