How do cleaner fish know bigger fish will not eat them?
Cleaner fish survive by using signals and behaviour that turn a predator into a customer. Cleaner fish often visit special cleaning stations on reefs. Larger fish arrive and pose calmly, sometimes opening their mouths or gills, while the cleaner fish eats parasites and dead skin. The bigger fish benefits from the cleaning, so it often does not eat the cleaner.
