How can mudskippers spend time out of water?

They keep their skin and gills moist enough to absorb oxygen. Mudskippers are fish, but they live in muddy shore areas where water comes and goes. They can absorb oxygen through moist skin and the lining of their mouth and throat. They also carry water in their gill chambers, which helps their gills keep working on land.
