Why do horned lizards squirt blood from their eyes?
Some horned lizards squirt blood as a startling defence against predators. When threatened, certain horned lizards can increase pressure in blood vessels around their eyes until tiny vessels burst and spray blood outward. The sudden spray can surprise predators, and the blood may taste unpleasant to animals such as coyotes and foxes.
