Why do bowerbirds decorate little stages?

Male bowerbirds build and decorate bowers to impress watching females. A bower is not usually a nest for eggs. It is more like a display stage built from sticks and decorated with shells, berries, flowers, feathers or human objects. Females visit and inspect the bower while the male performs.
