How can a tiny spark jump through the air?
A spark jumps when an electric charge becomes strong enough to rip through air molecules. Air normally does not conduct electricity well. But if charge builds up, the electric force can become strong enough to strip electrons from air molecules. That turns a narrow path of air into plasma, which can carry current for an instant.
