Why do fingerprints show up on glass?

Fingerprints show on glass because your skin leaves behind tiny oils, sweat and salts. Your fingertips have ridges, and your skin carries natural oils, sweat and tiny bits of dirt. When you touch smooth glass, those substances transfer in the same ridge pattern. Light then reflects differently from the smeared areas than from clean glass, so the print becomes visible.
