Why do some floors squeak?

Floors squeak when parts rub or move slightly under your weight. A floor is made from boards, joists, nails, screws or panels. Over time, wood can shrink, fasteners can loosen, or small gaps can open. When you step on that spot, one piece may flex and rub against another, or a nail may slide slightly in its hole.
