Why does chalk sometimes squeak?
Chalk squeaks when it sticks and slips across a surface in rapid tiny jumps. As chalk moves over a board, it does not always glide smoothly. It can catch for a moment, bend or drag, then suddenly slip forward. This stick-slip motion repeats very quickly, making vibrations that travel through the chalk and board as a squeak.
