Why do people give names to things that are not alive?

Because a name can make something feel familiar, memorable, or personally yours. People sometimes name cars, toys, instruments, boats, tools, or even a favourite mug. A name turns an object into part of a story: where it came from, who gave it to you, or what you've done together.
