How can hagfish make so much slime?

Special glands release protein threads and mucus that rapidly expand in seawater. When a hagfish is threatened, its slime glands release tiny protein threads and mucus. Seawater makes the mixture expand into a slippery cloud that can clog a predator's gills. The hagfish can even tie its body in a knot to scrape slime away.
