How do pistol shrimp make such a loud snap?
By snapping one oversized claw so quickly that it creates a collapsing bubble. A pistol shrimp closes its special claw at tremendous speed. The movement shoots a jet of water and forms a vapour bubble. When the bubble collapses, it creates a sharp shock wave and loud snap that can stun tiny prey nearby.
