Why does a nautilus have chambers inside its shell?

Because the chambers help the animal control how high or low it floats. A nautilus lives only in the newest outer chamber. Older chambers are sealed and connected by a thin tube. By adjusting gas and liquid inside them, the animal changes its buoyancy and can move up or down through the water.
