Why do vampire bats share food with hungry bats?

Because sharing can help trusted group members survive a night without feeding. Vampire bats can become dangerously weak after missing meals. A bat that fed successfully may regurgitate a little blood for a hungry roost mate. The favour is often exchanged within strong social relationships, helping a group member survive until another feeding chance.
