How do alpine ibex climb almost vertical dams?
By using split hooves with hard edges and grippy inner pads. Alpine ibex are remarkable climbers. Each hoof has a hard outer rim that catches tiny ledges and a softer pad that grips rough stone. Their balance and powerful legs let them cross steep surfaces while searching for minerals such as salt.
