Why does a star-nosed mole have a star on its face?

Because the star is an extraordinarily sensitive touch organ for finding food. The mole's nose has 22 fleshy rays covered with thousands of touch sensors. In dark, muddy tunnels, it rapidly taps the ground and water. Its brain processes these touches extremely quickly, helping the mole identify and eat tiny prey in a flash.
