Why do cormorants stand with their wings spread wide?
Because spreading their wings can help feathers dry and may also warm the bird. Cormorants often dive for fish, and their feathers can become wetter than those of many other waterbirds. After swimming, a bird may spread its wings to expose more feather surface to moving air and sunlight, helping moisture leave more quickly.
