Why do male frigatebirds inflate red throat balloons?

Because the bright pouch is a display used to attract a mate. During breeding season, a male frigatebird fills its red throat pouch with air until it becomes a huge, shiny balloon. He also calls and shakes his wings. Females inspect these displays when choosing among males gathered in a breeding colony.
