Why do ptarmigans grow feathers on their feet?
Because feathered feet help conserve warmth and spread weight over snow. Ptarmigans live in cold, snowy places. Feathers cover their feet and toes, reducing heat loss. The extra surface area also works a little like a snowshoe, helping the bird walk over soft snow without sinking as deeply.
