Why do shoebills have such enormous beaks?

Because the broad, hooked bill is built for grabbing large slippery prey. Shoebills hunt in wetlands, often standing almost motionless before striking. Their huge bill can clamp around fish and other aquatic animals, while the sharp hooked tip helps hold prey. The wide gape also suits the shoebill's sudden, powerful lunge.
