Why do okapis have zebra-like stripes on their legs?

Because the bold leg pattern may help young okapis follow their mothers in dim forest. Okapis live in dense rainforest where light breaks into patches and shadows. Their striped legs may help break up the body's outline. The bright pattern may also give calves an easy visual cue when walking close behind their mothers.
