Why do snowshoe hares have such wide back feet?

Because broad, furry feet spread their weight across soft snow. A snowshoe hare's hind feet are long and covered with stiff fur. The wide surface spreads the hare's weight, so each foot sinks less deeply into powdery snow. Powerful back legs then help the animal bound quickly through a winter forest.
