Why do some parrotfish sleep inside a mucus cocoon?

Because the slippery covering may hide smells and make some parasites less likely to reach them. Before resting, several parrotfish species release mucus from glands near the gills. The mucus forms a clear sleeping envelope around the fish. Evidence suggests it can reduce parasite attacks and may also make the resting fish harder for predators to detect by smell.
