Why do cleaner fish set up underwater cleaning stations?
Because larger fish visit to have parasites and dead tissue picked away. Cleaner wrasse advertise at familiar reef spots with distinctive colours and movements. Bigger fish approach and hold still, sometimes opening their mouths or gill covers. The cleaner gets food, while the visitor loses irritating parasites and damaged tissue.
