How do flying fish stay above the water for so long?
By building speed underwater and spreading enlarged fins like gliding wings. A flying fish races toward the surface, bursts into the air and opens its long pectoral fins. It does not flap like a bird. Instead, it glides, sometimes touching its tail to the water again to gain another burst of speed.
