How do sandgrouse fathers carry water to their chicks?

By soaking specially shaped belly feathers and flying the water back to the nest. Male sandgrouse visit distant waterholes and press their belly feathers into water. Fine feather structures hold droplets. Back at the nest, thirsty chicks squeeze and drink water from the damp feathers, allowing families to breed far from a permanent water source.
