Why is horseshoe crab blood blue?
Because its oxygen-carrying molecule uses copper instead of iron. Horseshoe crabs use haemocyanin to carry oxygen through their bodies. Haemocyanin contains copper. When the copper binds with oxygen, the blood appears blue. Human haemoglobin uses iron, which helps make oxygen-rich human blood look red instead.
