Why can some horned lizards squirt blood from their eyes?
Because the startling spray can discourage certain predators. Some horned lizards can sharply increase pressure in blood vessels around the eyes. Tiny vessels rupture and a stream of blood shoots outward. The spray can surprise attackers, and chemicals in it seem especially unpleasant to some canine predators.
