Why do walruses have such long whiskers?

Because sensitive whiskers help them find food on dark seafloors. A walrus searches the seabed for clams and other prey. Hundreds of stiff whiskers around its muzzle can detect tiny shapes and movements by touch. This is useful in murky water where eyes cannot easily see what is hidden in the sediment.
