Why does the rafflesia flower smell like rotten meat?

Because that rotten smell attracts flies that can carry away its pollen. Rafflesia grows a huge reddish flower with an odour just like decaying flesh. Carrion flies, hoping for food or a place to lay eggs, follow the smell and end up picking up pollen along the way.
