Why are pitcher plant rims so slippery?

Because a wet, smooth rim helps insects lose their footing and tumble in. A pitcher plant's rim turns extremely slick when wet. Insects hunting for nectar step onto that surface, slip, and fall into the deep cup below, where escape becomes very difficult indeed.
