Why do baobab trees have such enormous trunks?

Because thick, water-rich wood helps the tree survive long, dry seasons. Baobabs grow where rain can be strongly seasonal. Their broad trunks hold soft, fibrous wood that can store huge amounts of water, letting the tree live off its own reserves while it sheds its leaves.
