How can banyan roots turn into new trunks?
Because aerial roots grow downward from branches until they reach soil and thicken. A banyan sends roots dangling from its wide-spreading branches. Once a root reaches the ground, it anchors and thickens, eventually supporting its branch like an extra trunk, letting one tree spread across a huge area.
