How can people harvest cork without killing the tree?
Workers remove only the outer bark, leaving the living tissue underneath unharmed. Cork comes from a thick, protective layer on cork oak trunks. Skilled workers strip sections of outer bark without ever cutting into the living tissue underneath, letting the tree grow a new cork layer for future harvests.
