Why do strangler figs begin life high in other trees?

Because starting high in the canopy gives a young fig early access to sunlight. A bird may drop a sticky fig seed high on a branch, where it sprouts instead of on the dark forest floor. Long roots stretch downward toward the soil, while the young fig keeps its leaves up in the brighter canopy light.
